Tooth Extraction Basics
Why Would I Need an Extraction?
The most common reason for tooth extraction is problematic wisdom teeth. Less common reasons include damaged or infected teeth that can’t be saved with root canal therapy. Severe periodontal disease may also lead to necessary extraction. Tooth removal may also be necessary to prepare for implants, dentures, or some orthodontic procedures.
Problematic Wisdom Teeth
Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed?
Wisdom teeth are the rearmost set of four molars, which erupt between the ages of 17-25. By the time wisdom teeth begin to erupt, most people simply do not have enough extra space in their mouths to accommodate them. This can lead to issues with overcrowding, problems with your bite, and impaction (teeth that cannot fully erupt). For this reason, most patients opt to have their wisdom teeth removed as soon as they erupt.
How To Recognize
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
When wisdom teeth are unable to erupt completely from your gums, this is known as impaction. If this occurs, infections and other complications may develop in your mouth because impacted teeth are very difficult to clean. Plaque and tartar can build up, resulting in symptoms like pain in your jaw, swelling around your tooth, bleeding gums, and even difficulty or pain when opening your mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth must be extracted to resolve these issues. If you think that you may have an impacted wisdom tooth, call our office to schedule a consultation to determine whether an extraction is necessary.
